Time travel has been used in numerous ways in the books and movies. Back to the Future, Dr. Who, The Time Machine and Terminator, to name a few, have all indulged in adventures outside their timelines. Earlier this year, Disney aired a new series called Best Friend Whenever where two teens acquired the power to time travel from a laser blast at high voltage.
In The Time Manipulator’s Son, the species called helpers developed various powers, including time manipulation, from the electromagnetic atmosphere on the asteroid they live on. Time manipulation can freeze time or roll it backwards and forwards. This process is executed by literally moving time backwards and forwards to alter some event and has to be used with caution since this can result in catastrophic consequences.
The idea for this emerged from experiencing déjà vu, when we visit a place for the first time and feel that we’ve been there before or meeting someone for the first time and feeling like you have had some interaction with this person before. Hey, maybe time rolled back on us where we did this before and we were not aware! It also provides an explanation for occurrences like when we are sure we placed a pair of socks on the left side of a cupboard and discover they are not there. After frivolously searching, we find them on the right side of the cupboard, yet we can still recall placing them on the left side. I’m sure you’ve had an experience similar to this… Below is a small excerpt from The Time Manipulator’s Son, where Daniel, one of the main characters, experiences time manipulation for the first time.
Krysti changed the HD to a new, popular band called Luna Blast. As she inserted the disc, a holographic image of the group popped out and started performing. The children were all mimicking the group’s movements when the music stopped.
Daniel thought that the HD player had developed a defect. A closer look at the player revealed that the holographic image was frozen too. “I told you that HD player was no good!” he shouted to Krysti. His voice echoed in dead silence. Daniel felt like he was experiencing a brain freeze when he saw that everything else stood still. Parts of Krysti’s skirt formed a swirl. Benardo defied gravity by being suspended in the air from one of his dance jumps. The stationary ripples on the curtains took the form of sunset on a Reddy sky over a small mountain range, and the room rapidly grew humid.
Before he could say or do anything, the curtains appeared as if they were being pulled towards the temperature control vent; the HD flew out of the player and into Krysti’s hand. The furniture, walls, and people all blurred into rapid motion as he felt catapulted backwards through the air. He closed his eyes in fear, and then he felt the pressure disappear. Opening his eyes, he saw he was sitting in the kitchen at the meal table.
Krysti and David had just finished eating. Krysti returned to the table with some pastries in a small plate. Daniel pulled David towards the table and sat.
“How did we get here?” Daniel asked. David sat down, narrowed his eyebrows, and looked at him quizzically for a moment. Then he smiled and replied, “Well, Mammy and Daddy came from Earth, Krysti and I were born on Chyspah, and you came from the dead!”
“That’s not what I’m talking about!” he whispered harshly before looking around to ensure that no one else heard what was said. “I mean Krysti and I were in the recreation room with Benny listening to Luna Blast’s latest HD, and next thing I know, we ended up here!”
“You must be bazodee boy! I haven’t got that HD yet. I am going to buy it today,” said Krysti. Daniel had returned to the morning of the previous day.
