26th April was World Intellectual Property Day and the theme was “Women in Innovation and Creativity.” The Intellectual Property Office of Trinidad and Tobago (TTIPO) selected sixteen (16) women to display their works of creativity for this occasion. Being the first female science-fiction author from Trinidad, the TTIPO asked me to do a reading that was well received by the audience.
Being a former employee of the TTIPO, I felt honoured to be part of this celebration. I spoke about some of the originality in my book, “The Time Manipulator’s Son” and the importance of having written work protected through copyrighting. As I made eye contact with the audience, I was very pleased to see the expressions of interest on everyone’s faces.
My display was quite attractive with very eye catching and captivating cover design done by my publishers Something Or Other Publishing (SOOP). I also ran the book trailer on a laptop and I sold some books in the process.
Many congratulated me on my achievement. Others asked about the processes involved in getting a book published. Some of my former co-workers said that all the time they knew me, they did not know I had such an amazing imagination. Most of the questions were about what inspired me to write and my creativity. I explained that ever since I was a child, I knew I would write a book someday. When I read a book or saw a movie that I did not like the ending, I would create my own ending in my mind. Sometimes while listening to a collection of songs, an entire story will run through my mind at the end.
I also explained that writing a book takes time, effort and dedication. Creating the plot, alien characters and names, futuristic gadgets and places all come easily to me because I have a very vivid imagination. Words, sounds, a scent or a feeling would trigger off an idea. That idea would then grow into an incident that would have a beginning and an end. My plot is developed by creating the chapter headings, which are the ideas for the contents in each chapter that takes the reader from the beginning to the end.
At the end of my segment, I introduced my two original quotes:
“When there’s no solution, there is always an alternative.”
“The imagination is as vast as the universe waiting to be filled with ideas and concepts.”
The Time Manipulator’s Son is available on Amazon. com on paperback and kindle.
